Philippe chose his home city, Geneva, to set up a small design laboratory in which he experiments new forms and techniques. Notwithstanding influences from the design school of function oriented design and series production, he draws furniture, jewellery, porcelain, silverware and crystal using the methods of an artist. His approach brings together hand-crafted objects with industrial techniques, traditional materials with the latest technology, the codes of a vernacular aesthetic with a universal vision of beauty.

Philippe is also aware of the social and environmental impact of his products. He uses indigenous and sustainable materials wherever possible and mandates local artisans who revive ancestral techniques in order to produce his objects. He also works closely with the federal polytechnic schools who are developing tomorrow's manufacturing techniques and cutting edge materials.
Philippe Cramer aspires not only to conceive the most efficient products but also to create an emotional and intellectual triangle between an object, its creator and its user. His creations are essentially about building bridges.

Of Swiss and American nationality, Philippe Cramer was born in 1970. After schooling in Switzerland, he obtained a diploma in the History of Fine Arts of the 19th and 20th Centuries. In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Parson's School of Design in New York. In 2001, he founded Cramer and Cramer to be able to create and produce his work. In 2003, Cramer and Cramer opened a gallery in Geneva in the Quartier des Bains, in the heart of the contemporary art neighbourhood.

Several exhibitions have been dedicated to his work, notably: le Garage and the Edward Mitterrand gallery in Geneva, ArtCurial in Paris, ESF gallery in Lausanne and the Spazio Setmani and Swiss Cultural Centre Culturel of Milan.

In 2011, The Geneva Museum of Art and History gave him carte blanche in an exhibition entitled «L'Ornement Jamais». This ensemble has since been integrated in the permanent exhibition of the Museum and is now part of the Geneva state heritage collections.

Philippe Cramer lives and works in Geneva.
