With Aeternus Eternus, Philippe Cramer explores the relationship between material, time, and symbolism through a series of stone sculptures conceived for the public realm. Situated between sculpture, architecture, and functional object, these works invite both contemplation and physical engagement while reflecting on one of humanity’s most enduring themes: eternity.

The series is defined by a continuous looping form with neither beginning nor end. Its geometry evokes the Möbius strip, the double helix of DNA, and the infinite structures explored by artists such as Max Bill. More than a formal exercise, the loop becomes a metaphor for cyclical existence, perpetual transformation, and the continuity of life beyond human scale.

Drawing on ancient cosmologies and archetypal symbols, Aeternus Eternus recalls the Egyptian cycle of the dying and reborn sun as well as the Ouroboros, the serpent devouring its own tail. Rather than presenting time as a linear progression, the sculptures propose a vision of renewal in which endings become beginnings and opposites continuously transform into one another.

Carved from stone, the works create a compelling tension between permanence and movement. The material evokes geological time and endurance, while the flowing form suggests change, circulation, and becoming. This dialogue between stability and transformation lies at the heart of the series.

Designed to be inhabited as well as observed, the sculptures encourage visitors to sit, converse, and engage directly with the work. In doing so, they transform public space into a site of encounter and reflection. Originally created for the 2022 Open End 2 Sculpture Biennale at Geneva’s Cimetière des Rois, Aeternus Eternusembodies Philippe Cramer’s ongoing exploration of universal forms capable of connecting memory, landscape, and the timeless cycles that shape human existence.

The piece was first shown at Château Saint-Martin & Spa in Vence for the monographic outdoors exhibition
